DENR 6 Regional Technical Director for Protected Areas Wildlife and Coastal Zones Management Service (PAWCZMS) Conrado B. Marquez turns over the symbolic key of responsibility to Department of Tourism Regional Director Atty. Helen C. Catalbas to sit as chair of the Regional Ecotourism Committee (REC), Western Visayas in a simple ceremony at the DOT 6 Conference Room last July 14.

The event solidifies the transfer of Chairmanship from DENR, after it holds for a decade, to DOT, to lead and manage the ecotourism plans and programs of Region 6. Under Executive Order 111 otherwise known as Establishing the Guidelines for Ecotourism in the Philippines set the term of sitting Chair to ten (10) years.

Atty. Catalbas in her acceptance message, disclosed that plans are now underway for the improvement of identified ecotourism areas under the scheme “cross and drive” using Roll-on, Roll off (RoRo) covering the Islands of Panay, Guimaras and Negros. Further, a plan to invite tour operator groups to introduce the scheme is in the making in order to promote a sustainable and equitable social environmental ecotourism in the region.
