DENR 6 to reforest 19,105 has. of NGP Targets by September 2014

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Region 6 is set to accomplish planting of trees for the National Greening Program (NGP) in all identified areas of the region before the end of the 3rd quarter, this year. 

During the mid-year assessment of NGP accomplishment for the period January to June of this year, it shows an accomplishment of 21% out of the total 19,105 hectares target. This includes the regular NGP area of 10,595 hectares, the Grassroots Participating Budgeting (GPB) previously the Bottom-Up Budgeting (BUB) with the target area of 1,510 hectares and the Centrally-based funded of 7,000 hectare-area.   These target areas are distributed to the six (6) provinces broken down as follows: Aklan – 2,427; Antique – 3,768; Capiz – 4,006; Guimaras – 100; Iloilo – 3,815 and Negros Occidental – 4,989 all in hectares.

Although there is still a tremendous task to be undertaken to accomplish all these targets, all the six (6) provincial officials committed to Regional Director Jim O Sampulna and RTD for FMS Livino B. Duran that they will deliver the accomplishment of 100% on or before the end of the 3rd quarter of CY 2014 or by September 30, 2014.

With the onset of the rainy season, the planting sites ready for planting, with all the needed seedlings available and with the identified Peoples’ Organizations ready to plant the seedlings, the PENROs believed there is no reason they could not met their targets on schedule or ahead of time.

In his message to all the NGP provincial implementers, RD Sampulna stressed the marching order of DENR Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje that they should give more emphasis and to prioritize the implementation of the NGP without disregarding the other important programs and projects in the region. 

Chief FRCD and NGP Regional Coordinator Danilo Lorilla disclosed that the program has the following components: site preparation, seedlings production, and; maintenance and protection.  For site preparation, this includes brushing, hole digging, staking and planting activities.  

National Greening Program is among the priority programs of the government aimed to reforest 1.5 Million hectares of barren lands with 1.5 Billion of trees.  NGP further aimed to address food and security; poverty reduction; environmental stability; bio-diversity conservation and climate change mitigation and adaptation.
