The DENR apprehended illegally cut lumbers from an old reforestation area in Brgy. Paningayan in Culasi, Antique numbering to 75 pieces of Gmelina with a total volume of 362.7 board feet having an estimated value of P10,881.
Based on the investigation conducted by the DENR CENRO-Culasi, Mr. Sanny Fernando admitted that he was responsible for the cutting of forest products which shall be used for the construction of his house.
Fernando, a native of the said barangay, is also a member of the Paningayan Upland Farmers Association, a partner people’s organization of the DENR in charge of the greening efforts in Brgy. Paningayan and nearby hinterland barangays.
He said that he was not aware and has no knowledge on forest laws, regulations and policy.
DENR Culasi CENR Officer Vicente T. Mellizas Jr. said that his office is intensifying its campaign on illegal logging activities and transport of forest products in northern Antique, and that all violations will be dealt with accordingly.
CENRO Culasi has utilized Bantay Gubats under the PAMANA program to conduct a massive information and education campaign and strict monitoring in strategic areas to deter illegal logging activities and transport of forest products.
The apprehended lumbers are temporarily housed at the DENR CENRO Culasi for safekeeping and will undergo administrative proceedings to determine probable cause for the filing of appropriate cases in court.
Earlier, DENR Regional Director Jim O Sampulna directed all its field offices to intensify their campaign against illegal logging activities especially in forestlands and in reforestation areas of the government, including the planting for the National Greening Program
