The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Region 6 have awarded exposure trips to region’s Protected Areas (PAs) for the winners of the One Billion Rising (OBR) Dance competition.

The OBR dance contest with the nationwide theme song: “Isang Bilyong Babae ang Babangon,” was conducted during the National Women’s Month Celebration (NWMC) Culminating Activity. This year’s theme is: “WE for Gender and Inclusive Society” was adopted to continue inculcating in our consciousness respect for women. The OBR Dance Contest was held on March 29, 2023 at the DENR Courtyard. The contest was participated by the Region-based and field offices from region 6 which composed of PENROs Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental.

Winners of the OBR dance contest will have a chance to visit and explore one of the Protected Areas (PAs) in the region, namely:

Champion - PENRO Iloilo (Trip to Boracay Island)

1st Place - PENRO Negros Occidental (Trip to Taklong Island Marine Reserve)

2nd Place - PENRO Guimaras (Trip to Sagay Marine Reserve)

The exposure trips will serve as reward and recognition of talents, skills and expertise in conceptualizing and integrating gender and ENR perspectives in a dance platform. Further, this will provide venue for both women and men to appreciate the importance of different ecosystems of our environment.

“These exposure trips will help our own employees appreciate all our efforts in protecting our forestlands. It will be a great avenue for them to know why our PAs are protected,” DENR 6 Regional Executive Director Livino B. Duran said.

OBR first begun in 2013 with the fierce struggle against sexual and physical violence –it is an advocacy dance against rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation and sex trafficking. This activity is also one of the prime movers to promote gender equality in the management, conservation, development and protection of the environment.
