Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6 headed by Regional Executive Director Livino B. Duran actively participated at the Tree Hugging Activity held at Bulabog Putian National Park (BPNP), Sitio Tarug, Brgy. Moroboro, Dingle, Iloilo on February 14, 2024.

The said initiative runs from February 12 to 16, 2024 and is spearheaded by the Forest Management Bureau which aims to promote awareness in raising efforts about the importance of nurturing forests and the perceived benefits of tree-hugging to a person’s well-being.

 Along with RED Duran are Assistant Regional Directors Raul L. Lorilla for Technical Services and Andres T. Untal for Management Services, Environment Management Bureau (EMB) Regional Director- Atty. Ramar Niel V. Pascua, Mines and Geosciences Bureau OIC-Regional Director- Cecilia L. Ochavo-Saycon, Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer Glenn S. Del Norte of CENRO Barotac Nuevo, Supervising Ecosystems Management  Specialist and concurrent Protected Area Superintendent (PASu)  of BPNP- Ma. Alma P. Demontaño, division and section chiefs from the regional office, and other DENR 6 personnel.

“This activity wants to instil upon us the love as well as the protection of our forests. It aims to advocate the mantle of protection that should be accorded to our environment as a whole. This is actually conceptualized by the Forest Management Bureau because we wanted really to campaign for the protection of trees and the forest,” RED Duran said.

The main focal point of the activity is the estimated one hundred thirty-five (135)-year-old Dao Tree (Dracontomelon dao) situated inside the park. This native tree species can reach up to fifty (50) meters in height, one hundred (100) centimeters in diameter above the buttress, and with narrow buttresses reaching up to twelve (12) feet high. It is one if the main attractions inside the park.

Aside from hugging the huge Dao, the participants also went about to explore the park and hugged selected trees within the immediate vicinity.

Apart from the event of region-based officials and personnel at BPNP, the different Provincial and Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENROs/CENROs) also held their own tree hugging activities featuring native tree species on selected areas within their jurisdiction.
