In celebration of World Wetlands Day, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 6 through its Conservation and Development Division (CDD) conducted a Bird Watching Activity in Barangay Tubigan, Zarraga, Iloilo last February 02, 2019.

The DENR CDD prepared the needed equipment including binoculars and telescopes for the students of Zarraga National High School to closely spot the birds. The students enjoyed the environment and were amazed seeing hosts of different species of migratory birds hovering and wading along the area.

Migratory birds sighted in the area were Black winged-stilt, Egrets, Heron and Moorhen.

After the Bird Watching Activity, the CDD team conducted a lecturette on climate change and the importance of wetlands. It was followed by a Poster and Slogan Making contest among students to showcase their creativity and skills. Also, an Environmental Photo exhibit was installed by the Regional Public Affairs Office (RPAO) for the students, showcasing climate change and birds found in wetlands.

“Wetlands and Climate Chang’ is the theme of the World Wetlands Day 2019. The theme demonstrate the important of wetlands  to mitigate the impacts of climate change and have a sustainable environment. It also has a sub-theme which states: “We are not powerless against climate change. Stop Draining Wetlands.

The activities aim to teach the youth to protect and appreciate wetlands in our ecosystem as they play a critical part in our natural environment for protecting our shores, reducing of floods, absorbing pollutants, improving water quality and serving as habitat for animals.

The Regional Executive Director (RED) Francisco E. Milla Jr. was happy to note that the birds seen in Brgy.
